History

Nii Quaye Tawiah, also known as Quaye Nungua, was a well-known businessman and an important native son of the community when he conceived of the idea to construct Nungua Senior High School as the first secondary school in the town of Nungua in the year 1958. He wanted the school to be the first of its kind in the area.

In the same year, his 15-year-old son, Master Enoch Otu Quaye, who was attending school at Presbyterian Secondary School, Odumase Krobo, had to be recalled home and installed as a Chief of Nungua. He had to do this because he had to take over the leadership of Nungua. Because of the responsibilities associated with his newly assumed job, the young chief was compelled to remain in his home territory of Nungua in order to fulfil his chieftaincy responsibilities. In spite of this, the young guy had a strong ambition to achieve academic distinctions, and he insisted that he be granted permission to carry on with and finish his secondary education.

His father consented, but instead of sending him back to Krobo Odumase to finish his education, he decided to create a local secondary school at Nungua so that his son may pursue his academic studies there while also being easily available for chieftaincy duties and responsibilities. His son’s school will be called Nungua Secondary School. Within two years of making the decision, Quaye Nungua had converted the multi-unit building complex on his then-large residential compound into a secondary school. It was outfitted with its own generator, which at the time was the only one in the town. From this point on, the Nungua Township’s very first secondary school began its journey towards becoming fully operational.
