History

Rev. Ezekiel Festus O’Reilly, an Anglican priest from Sierra Leone, started the school in August of 1925. Accra High School, Adisadel College, and Mfantsipim School are the three senior high schools in the Greater Accra Region that are older than O’Reilly Senior High School. O’Reilly Senior High School is the fourth oldest senior high school in Ghana. O’Reilly Educational Institute was the original moniker for the educational establishment in question. The then-Minister of Education, the Honourable Dowuona – Hammond, made the official proclamation that the institution may now officially open its doors. The founders of the school had one primary goal in mind when they established it, and that was to give boys from impoverished families the opportunity to receive an education. The school was supposed to offer a comprehensive educational programme that would continue for a total of twelve years, beginning with the baby years and ending with the school leaving exams. The kindergarten department was the first to be founded in 1925, and by the time close to 1927 rolled around, there were already close to two hundred young children attending the school.

The first location of the school was in the basement of a huge home in Accra that was owned by Barrister Silas Dove. This location was at Korle Wokon, which is located north of Ussher Town. It was absolutely necessary to find a location for the school that offered a greater amount of space as the student body continued to expand. In 1926, made the decision to go on a fund-raising tour that would take them across Nigeria and the Gold Coast. Because the project was so successful, he immediately began searching for a new location on which to construct further structures.

To his good fortune, he had already developed a relationship with Francis Dove, the older brother of Mr. Silas Dove, who was kind enough to provide him with a sizable plot of land in Tudu on which to erect facilities for the school. By 1927, the buildings had been erected thanks to the efforts of Reverend O’Reilly, the professors, and the students. On October 20, 1961, the institution relocated from its original location in Tudu to a building in James Town that had once been occupied by Accra Academy. Because the school was in the process of finding a permanent location at Kokomlemle, this arrangement was only ever intended to be a short-term solution. Despite our best efforts, this was not possible.

The number of students attending the institution continued to rise, and its facilities required expansion; as a result, the institution was forced to relocate from James Town to rented premises in Kokomlemle. Years passed while the school remained in this location. Then again, somewhere in the middle of the 1980s, the landlord of the premises where the Kokomlemle school was located kicked the school out. This action caused the school to lose a significant amount of property and documents, which led to the school’s closure. But by the grace of God, they were able to find a home in Adabraka. After moving in, the school took up residence in a building with three stories just behind the Holy Spirit Cathedral.

The Ghana Education Service issued a directive to the school in August of 2010 instructing it to prepare for closure and to stop taking new students. The proprietors of the building that houses the school made the decision that since the Service could not afford to buy the facility, they would no longer lease it to the Service. This decision was made due to the fact that the building housed the school.Nevertheless, in December of that year, the Service conceived of a scheme to relocate the school to a different location.Teshie Okpoi-Gonno has taken over as the new home of the School. The new structure that was created to house the students is suitable for educational use and can accommodate all of the class’s activities. The educational institution provides all of the classes that students are interested in taking. Activities that are part of the curriculum include things like interdepartmental debate, quizzes, and athletics.
